SELF-ASSESSMENT AND INTROSPECTION

 SELF-ASSESSMENT

AND INTROSPECTION

A STORY ON TEAM SPIRIT

A farmer, whose corn always took the first prize in the corpse exhibition, had the habit of sharing his best corn seeds with all the farmers in the neighbour-hood.  When asked why, he said, “The wind carries pollen from one field to another. If my neighbours grow inferior corn, the cross pollination may bring down the quality of my seeds.  So, I must share my seeds, so that we can get the best corn together.”

SELF-ASSESSMENT AND INTROSPECTION

Self-assessment is a judgement about one's own abilities; skills; personality; policy; principles; decisions; failures; successes etc.  Thus, the self -assessment is a process of examination of self and comparison of self with others in the society.

The introspection is nothing other than examination and consideration of one’s own ideas, thoughts and feelings.  It is also self-examination or looking inwardly in order to know who I am.  The self-assessment and introspection helps one to understand about the commitment of mistakes for their failure and stagnant growth.  They can understand well about why they fail or how they succeed.  Whatever they do, they would have known it in advance, and according to their plan, they will execute everything.

The self generally indicates the soul, mind and body.  This creates the self-awareness of what I am, what am I born for, where did I come from, where do I go to, what should I do here, why do I suffer, do I behave honestly?  How do I earn money, name, fame etc., do I cheat anyone, do I commit any sin, am I respected, am I respercting others and so many others questions about self and allied.

But, generally, the term self-assessment, means the things, in the context of life on the earth.  It enables one to understand about his/her SWOT, which is an abbreviation of strength, weakness, opportunities, threat.  It discloses the causes for the failure and support for the success.

The assessment can give us answers for all our questions about ourselves such as Where are we, do I lead a satisfactory life, am I greater tahn others, am I superior to others or am I inferior, have I been growing in respect of mind, body money, property, family, social status, prestige, education, sense etc.

The process of self-assessment is undertaken normally by those who have failed in their life or by those, who have committed some sins or some blunder mistakes or who have created heavier, unbearable losses or who are scolded/described by family members and other stakeholders to be useless or who are always worried, feel inflicted.  Thus, the self-assessment is an examination for the repeated defaulters.

Also, the self-assessment is a tool, useful for showing us the direction of  growth.  The self-assessment is completely different from self-introspection.  Because, the former is related to body, physical and other worldly enjoyments, while the latter is related with the soul of the whole, the supernatural.

COLLABORATION

Collaboration is cooperation which is working together to create the same thing or achieve a common goal.  It is a process where two or more people or organisations work together to realise shared goals or more people or organisations work together to realise shared goals. The collaboration corroborates the statement “united we live, divided we fall,”  “Unity is strength”.  Working in collaboration requires good communication between team members and also a certain degree of trust.  Collaboration Development of this quality aims

To help students develop a positive attitude towards group work.

To help students learn and respect others’ opinions and contribute within a group.

There are a lot of examples of collaboration in nature like bees, ants, waspe etc.  In the beehive, all worker bees cooperate and collaborate to support their queen and thereby maintain their hive.  An Ant Colony is yet another example where the female worker ants work together for their sustenance.  We humans have a long list of achievements that were possible by doing things collaboratively.  Working together across disciplines, across population and across geographical boundaries, we have together explored the depths of the ocean and explored space.

INTERPERSONAL RELATIONSHIP

Getting along with others is an important part of life at all stages.  As an empowerment tool, especially at the workplace, managing relationships is of crucial importance.  It involves developing communication skills including listening, persuasive speaking, negotiation and so on.  It also involved being able to work in teams, offer solutions, solve problems and come up with effective decisions.

CREATIVE THINKING

Creative thinking is about generating ideas on issues, problems and challenges.  Michael   Michael ko an expert on creative thinking says, creative thinking is possibility thinking.  It is about generating ideas without judgement.  The secret to deferring judgement is to separate the thinking process into possibility thinking and practicality thinking”.  His steps by step process are as follows:

  1. Generate as many ideas as possible on an issue or a problem.

  2. Defer judgement

  3. Create as many ideas as possible

  4. List the ideas

  5. Elaborate on the ideas

  6. Improve on these ideas

  7. Hit upon the best possible solution from your list.  He calls it mind popping or that an idea will present (mind pop) itself as the most obvious.
