 EXPLODING WORLD OF

SCIENCE AND

TECHNOLOGY

ENVIRONMENT

Making children sensitive to the environment and the need for its protection is an immediate social concern.  The reckless exploitation of the environment, depletion of ozone layer, global warming, industrial pollution, deforestation, soil erosion, nuclear fallout due to overpopulation, new technological choice, living styles etc, witnessed during the last century has led to environmental degradation.

It is imperative to nurture the values of care and concern for the physical and natural environment, use of environmental resources in a rational and constructive way, realise the interdependence between human beings and the environment and so on for living in true harmony with nature.  Individual’s health can no longer be no longer maintained without concern for the preservation and sustainability of the environment.

EXPLODING WORLD OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

It is very clear that coming decades are going to see a heater explosion of science and technology while we are still trying to cope up with the present challenges of new technology.  It has many good and bad unintended consequences.  How science and technology is to be used is a question of values.

Application of science and technology in a more humane and rational way is related to moral and ethical responsibility.  The values and attitudes can only make a difference to guide individual actions based on the principles of fairness, goodness, constructive and critical attitude and wisdom to discern between the potential and pitfalls of scientific and technological advancements.

MASS MEDIA

A major ubiquitous aspect of contemporary society is the intrusion of the mass media into the day to day life of all societies.  The values and attitudes that get transmitted most often are rather contrary to the values desired by the family, society of school.  Propagating myths and derogatory images of women for example is likely to make the young learner, instead of learning that all human beings are equal and all men and women are equal, grow up with prejudices injurious to women and society.

Students are required to go through the process of learning in schools by which they are empowered to decode the negative messages that the mass media propagates purely from a commercial and money making point of view.  Centred thinking, reflection, social responsibility, questioning, discerning truth and facts, freedom from biases are all important values and skills to be developed by young learners.

There is a need to examine and ensure how these issues and concerns are dealt with appropriately in our school system, in curriculum, teaching the administrative processes the international climate of the school and how our students are given opportunities to develop their considered opinions and convictions to meet the above challenges peacefully and creatively.

HOLISTIC LIVING

Holistic or conscious living consists of harmony and balance to the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of all living things, beyond the self.  In ancient times, our forefathers lived in a holistic fashion.  Their lives were aligned with nature.  With crass commercialization and changing times, we live at strife, war, stress and violence.

En citizendium.org describes Holistic living as follows.  “It is a term used to define simple and spiritual living with moderation in food intake, adequate exercise and positive thinking and attitude to life.  Yoga is an example of this concept.

In general, it encompasses the following.

  • Simple living (“far from the madding crowd or rat race”).

  • Simple food (with less ROS generators - i.e., mostly vegetarian and neither less nor more is the amount).

  • Physical exercise (neither light nor heavy - i.e., regular and moderate).

  • Relaxation or de-stressing through various techniques.

  • Positive outlook (optimism) towards life.”

DISTINCTIONS BETWEEN VALUE EDUCATION AND MORAL EDUCATION

  1. The concept of value education is more elaborative. Moral education is a constituent of value education.

  2. Value education is development as it is based on some exceptional and mostly on expected values.  But, moral education is based on the ideality of society.

  3. In valued education, all round growth of the entire human society is taken into consideration.  But in moral education only the personal growth of every individual, with its relation to society is considered.

  4. Value education is scientifically oriented.  But moral education is culture-based.  Because, in moral education, the social customs, religious and communal faiths and traditions of consistent generations are taught, so as they reflect the religion, being followed by.

  5. Value education consists of various components like Religion, community, society, nation, environment, individual, and universe etc.  but, moral education consists of the relation existing between individuals and society.
