 DNA Fingerprinting

It is a technique employed by forensic scientists to assist in the identification of individuals by their respective DNA profiles.  This technique is based upon the fact that the DNA constitution of an individual carries some specific sequences of nucleotides, which do not carry any information for protein synthesis.  These are called VNTR regions, i.e. Variable Number Tandem Repeats or mini satellites.

DNA fingerprinting was invented by Dr. ALEC JEFFREYS.

Process

  • Collection of sample (most preferably buccal swab).

  • RFLP (Restriction Fragments Length Polymorphism) analysis.

  • Southern blotting DNA fingerprinting is a quite laborious method that requires a large amount of undergrads sample so the method was replaced by what is used today based on STR (Short Tandem Repeats) and PCR.
